An impressive site, with a strong visual impact, stands in the beating heart of the island of Ortigia. Perhaps the alley where it is located is a bit unknown to many Syracusans, but certainly not to artisans and art lovers. The prestigious property we present was established in 1652 as the Monastery of Santa Teresa, founded under the Carmelite rule by the then bishop Giovanni Antonio Capobianco. In this Church, in addition to the celebrations of their own institute, the Teresians solemnly celebrated the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. A fire in the 1800s destroyed it, and it was rebuilt in 1806, but in 1882, due to lack of maintenance of the convent, the nuns were forced to move, and finally, in 1885, the church was given to the Navigators' Society. It was permanently closed to worship in June 1924. Subsequently, it hosted and was the seat of important public and private activities. The building covers a total surface area of approximately 500 square meters and is approximately ten meters high; it is on three levels with pillars supporting the upper levels. On the outside you can admire the main façade of the building, the windows enriched by frames on the sides, details that tell the story of a sacred place. Today, thanks to an urban-scenographic reworking, you can revive a historical-cultural cross-section of a monument with its oldest, surviving, architectural testimonies of Ortigia.
